Why do parents do this?

My 7 year old was invited to a birthday sleepover for tomorrow. The problem is we do not know the parents! I do know the little girl because I volunteer in my daughter's class every Tuesday. One other little girl was also invited and I know her and her parents very well. I called the mom I know to ask if they had met the parents of the birthday girl. They do not know the family either.

When the mom called to invite our daughter -dh said it was fine. WTF -was my reaction. Dh said "she sounded nice..." Um -so did Ted Bundy! Oy!

The plan is the other parents are going to take our daughter and theirs to the sleepover. They plan to stay, chat and check out the scene for a bit before they leave the girls there. They feel bad for the birthday girl. I trust these parents but I am still not keen on this whole idea.

I am very introverted but when I became pregnant with my first I realized I would have to change my ways. I try to integrate as myself in all my children's activities and get to know their friends and the other parents. Being social is not easy for me but it has paid off. I have actually made quite a few friends and our kids have become good friends.

When I have had the occasion to invite children to our home and I do not know the parents, I always invite the parents as well. Am I being overprotective? I honestly do not think so!
